CONCEPT
The owners of this house found their plan in one of the numerous home plan catalogs they perused.  Having found the design they liked they began discussions with a local contractor to begin the building process.  As they were planning a move from California to the area these discussions were carried out long-distance.  Although the house met most of the owners’ general needs they had a sizeable list of items they wanted to do to customize the house, ranging from physical room changes to improved air handling systems.  This residence is the perfect example of not only how a plan bought from a catalog can be converted into a custom home, but also how the process can happen over the span of thousands of miles.  The architect was retained to make many of the changes whether they be merely suggestions or more complex modifications, and – just as important – the owners found a contractor that they could trust to make the changes without continued oversight.  The result is a home that reflects the owners’ every wish and need that is also representative of the historic colonial style architecture prevalent in the region.
