DESIGN CONCEPT
The house reflects a traditional Virginia style but is designed to accommodate a modern lifestyle.  The columned front porch, the wood siding and brick base, the dormers and the multi-paned windows all recall the early American architecture native to the area.  The plan, however, is conducive primarily to informal family life; the family room, kitchen, and breakfast room are all open to one another creating a large space for everyday activities.  These rooms are adjacent to a long back deck overlooking the back yard.  The dining room provides ample space for formal get-togethers, but in lieu of a living room there is a guest bedroom and bath.  On the side of the house a service hall connects the kitchen and the garage and is accessed by a side service porch.  The upstairs of the house has a lower plate height in the front, lowering the scale of the house from a true two-story dwelling to 1-1/2 stories, and the front eave is punctuated by half dormers.  This creates small ceiling clips which make the three bedrooms upstairs more intimate. Above the garage and accessible from the service area adjacent to the kitchen is a large playroom and an office or workshop is attached to the back of the garage.
